Cute and fluffy. Albatross chick, Midway Atoll

As regular readers will be aware,  I travelled to the Hawaiian Islands earlier this year (March-April) and have been slowly (too slowly!) picking my way through the photos since.   Part of my travels,  indeed the main reason why I did the trip,  included a visit to Midway Atoll to view and photograph the birdlife there. Midway is famous as the location of a pivotal world war 2 sea battle but today is no longer occupied or administered by the military but instead has been left to nature, notably the thousands of seabirds that nest and breed there. Those who’ve checked in on this blog recently will notice some major changes are taking place.

Today’s featured image currently takes a prominent place on the new opening page of the site and is of a Laysan Albatross chick. At the time of my visit, the Laysan Albatross chicks, and there were thousands of them, were about 8 weeks old and as you can see rather cute and fluffy. With no natural predators, the birds tend to be quite fearless of humans and it was possible to get quite close to them without causing them any stress. I spent about a week on the islands (Midway actually consists of 3 islands, not 1), and as you can imagine ended up with heaps of photos, some of which I’ll present in the weeks ahead.

I’m currently making changes to the website,  will reconstruct some of the image galleries as well as building some new ones.   Thanks for your patience as this process continues.  If anyone has any comments,  requests,  or wishes to offer any suggestions,  I’d be pleased to hear from you.    ~KD.

Hard to believe how ugly that bird looks like as a baby. And you certainly captured that. Love the detail of his matted looking coat. What a furry creature it is as a young one. You are doing a great job here with you site. Have a wonderful rest of week and weekend. Hugs Carrie

“Ugly”…. well I guess that just proves that old saying about beauty being in the eye of the beholder 🙂 Glad you enjoyed your visit here Carrie.
