Galapagos giant tortoise

The Galapagos giant tortoise is the world’s largest living tortoise and has 10 subspecies surviving in the wild distributed on 7 of the Galapagos Islands.  This specimen was photographed on Santa Cruz Island.

There is considerable evolutionary diversity between the subspecies as they have adapted over the millennia to the conditions which are specific to the individual islands.    Slow-moving,  of course,   they have a very acute sense of smell!
