Red Phalarope, Svalbard

Continuing with the Svalbard images,  today the beautiful Red Phalarope.   This bird was occasionally seen on small ponds usually individually,  sometimes in pairs.    This species was a bit more skittish than some others we saw and getting close images was a challenge.

In this instance the bird was partially obscured by reeds in a larger pond,  so even a careful commando crawling approach over the marshy surrounds to the pond’s edge still didn’t get me a satisfying frame filling image.   That is until the bird decided to take flight,  (not due to my activities I might add) resulting in this image.    Whilst the bird had been frustratingly small in frame,  this became a blessing when she took off.    With wings extended the loose framing meant no clipped wings and the flying water droplets were a bonus.

True toe nails!

Tapping away at the blog,  I sometimes wonder whether there’s actually anyone reading this stuff.   Hardly ever does a genuine reader comment.    As part of the system,  I have a spam filter which catches most of those automated messages from the internet’s scumbags and scoundrels,  they make up the bulk of the “comments” I do get .    Sometimes before hitting the delete button,  I have a quick read of these messages just for the unintended entertainment value present in the fractured English used.   Today’s gem offers glowing tributes about the blog being…”educative” and “participatory” and concludes that a recent post “…. hit the true toe nail on the brain”    Say what????      The URL given is,  of course,  of no value,   but I’ll bet they can do a great deal on Rolex watches!   : -) ~KD
