Fischer's lovebird (Agapornis fischeri) is a small parrot species of the Agapornis genus. (Thank you Wikipedia!) They are native to east-central Africa, south, and southeast of Lake Victoria in northern Tanzania (I photographed this one in Serengeti National Park). The bird's range varies with conditions, in drought years some birds move west into Rwanda and Burundi seeking moister conditions.
Conservation status
It's believed there are between 290,000-1,000,000 left in the wild and whilst they aren't considered endangered, they are now considered "near threatened" due to widespread trapping for the pet trade. The decline in numbers began in the 1970s and by 1987 they were the most commonly traded birds in the world. The export of Fischer's Lovebirds is now prohibited.
This bird was one of a flock of about 50 or 60 birds that I observed perched in a spiny acacia, I chose here to isolate the individual bird in the frame.
