From the Botswana files, late in the afternoon we spent some quality time with this lone bull elephant near Chitabe camp in the Okavango Delta. I understand that elephants can get to 6.5 tons in weight, this magnificent fellow must have been close to that, I think he was the largest bull we saw. Notice the fluid issuing from the between his eye and his ear. This is indicative of a male "in musth" in other words, ready to mate. The fluid has a powerful smell, even obvious to the poorly developed human sense of smell!
Photographed from a respectful distance with the 500mm telephoto lens as a bull in season can be unpredictable and dangerous.
