A doorway within the Constitution Hill historic site in Johannesburg, South Africa. The site is the home of the modern day Constitutional Court of South Africa, but was previously the site of the notorious ‘cell block 4′ where prisoners were held in atrocious conditions during the apartheid era.

Photographed in Hluhluwe/Imfolozi,  South Africa,  I watched these impala for about 15 minutes as they gathered and milled about nervously by this stream.   They were intent on climbing up the river bank to higher ground but in order to do so would have to make their way through long grass and brush before getting to [...]

Another shot from my time in the Drakensberg Mountains,  South Africa.    This extra wide panorama is the result of an 11 frame,  yes that’s right 11 frame,  stitching.   Good grief,  that’s more stitches than a sock darning contest!    Each shot was taken in vertical format at a focal length of 50mm.    All camera settings were [...]

Taken in Imfolozi Game Reserve,  South Africa,  late afternoon,  one zebra keeps watch whilst others drink at the waterhole. Canon 5D with 70-300 DO lens at 300mm and F5.6,  shutter speed 1/60 second at ISO 400. Wild vs Captive debate. One website which I check out frequently is naturescapes.net.  The site features some excellent nature [...]

Another shot from my boat trip on the St Lucia Wetlands,  South Africa,  this Fish Eagle had just caught itself a huge mullet and flown to a nearby tree branch with it.  Unfortunately I didn’t get to see the bird actually catching its prey,  that could have been a really nice picture!    I won’t pretend [...]

Today’s picture,  a Cape Glossy Starling photographed in Hluhluwe Game Reserve, South Africa.   The image is very much as nature presented it,  the only post processing on this shot was a slight cropping and digital sharpening.   I took several images of this bird but like this one most,  the breeze just ruffled up a few [...]

Walk softly and carry a camera! Early in the 20th century there was a US president (Theodore Roosevelt) whose approach to international relations was supposedly summed up with the phrase ‘walk softly and carry a big stick’.    Well I’ll paraphrase that as ‘walk softly and carry a camera!’     Today’s image was captured in the St [...]

Giant Kingfishers, new brushes and RSS. My first post for 2009 so let me start by wishing readers best wishes for the new year,  happy blogging and good health to all! Today’s image is of a Giant Kingfisher sighted at St Lucia Wetlands in South Africa during my visit there mid 2008.   As it’s name [...]

Photographed in Hluhluwe Game Reserve,  South Africa,  this brown hooded kingfisher sat unconcerned on a reasonably low tree branch long enough for me to get several shots. Canon 20D with 500mm lens at F5.6,  shutter speed 1/800 second at ISO 200 Given that this is likely to be my last posting before Christmas,  I extend [...]

Photographed in Hluhluwe/Imfolozi Park,  South Africa, this is one of a pair of Egyptian geese that I observed at a water hole late in the afternoon, very late in the afternoon actually (as I’ll discuss in a moment).    In the park there were several water holes where permanent hides had been erected.   I made my [...]

How to eat Sushi, an expert’s guide.    Something different today,  an expert’s guide to Sushi!   The Goliath Heron,  as its name suggests,  is the largest of the heron species found in South Africa and is the subject of today’s sequence of shots taken in the St Lucia Wetlands of Kwazulu-Natal Provence. This stately bird [...]

This shot, a study in gold and blue, was taken just a couple of minutes after the image in last Friday’s post “golden pool”.    My eye was drawn to the seed heads of these tall grasses along the creek bank and I got a couple of shots.   I regret that I was in a hurry [...]

Late in the day in the Drakensberg Mountains, South Africa,  the setting sun reflects off a hill to light a golden pool.    I was on a hiking trail alongside the creek making my way towards the park exit when the light reflecting off the water caught my eye.    I like the way the moving water [...]

Today’s image from the Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa,  is an exercise in panoramic stitching.    6 shots were taken in vertical format with all camera functions set to manual so that no changes occurred in aperture, shutter speed, ISO or focus from one shot to the next.   A little bit of overlap was included in [...]

Hippos and religion. Photographed on the waterways of the St Lucia Wetland Park on the east coast of South Africa,  these were two of several hippopotamus that I saw whilst undertaking a boat trip together with about 30 or 40 other tourists.   The hippos were unconcerned by the presence of the boat (they probably get [...]

During my travels through South Africa, I visited Hluhluwe (pronounced; Shesh shlewee) Game Reserve in the Kwazulu-Natal region.   This game reserve and the adjoining Imfolozi Reserve are said to have the highest density of wildlife of any of the reserves in South Africa.   Whilst that may be true,  it’s also true that parts of the [...]

Time for a change of pace, or at least location,  I think.   As regular readers will know, I’ve been posting a lot of images from my Tanzania photo safari which I did earlier this year (June-July).    After the Tanzania  leg of my travels,  I continued on to South Africa where I spent about 10 days [...]
