candid photography

An image which I’ve published previously but recently revisited as part of rebuilding my collection of China photos.     It was 1999 with the sunsetting when I noticed and photographed this young couple overlooking Hong Kong Harbour.   Is there a story here?   I think so,  it’s tempting to use our imaginations to fill in the blanks.   Who [...]

A wander through the fish markets of Bangkok, Thailand, provided some opportunities to meet and interact with some of the people working there and also provided some enjoyable photographic opportunities.

A man looks out the doorway of a crowded train at Haridwar, India.    Shortly after the busiest days of the Kumbh Mela festival and people in their thousands were gathered at rail stations to make their way home to the various parts of India from where they had travelled.    We were waiting among the throng [...]

Walking along the waterfront,  along the ghats of the River Ganges at Varanasi,  I observed a young girl on the porch of a dwelling petting her pet parrot.   I immediately recognised the parrot species as a Cockatiel (zoological name Nymphicus hollandicus for those that are interested in that stuff),  a native Australian parrot species [...]

A candid portrait with a difference,  the woman is engaged with the camera but her details remain obscure,  mysterious even,  under her red veil. Canon 5D Mark 2 with 24-105mm zoom at 105mm and F4.0,  shutter speed 1/640 second at ISO 500.

One of the things I like to try and capture in photographs is juxtaposition,  an unlikely or quirky combination of elements.     That was what sprang to my mind when I noticed this man looking at a poster in Haridwar.   This scene presented itself on the edge of a temporary,  tented community in Haridwar.    Millions of people had [...]

During the course of the Kumbh Mela festival in Haridwar,  people from all over India were staying in temporary tented accommodation in and around the town.   We were made to feel welcome within these areas and the people were generally very accommodating to our photographic endeavours (intrusions?)    Fairly early one morning I found myself within one of these [...]

One of the pleasing things that occurred this week was discovering this photograph when going through some of my India files.   “Woman at window, Varanasi”,  is a shot that I don’t specifically recall taking.    It was one of several images that I captured with the 70-300 mm zoom lens whilst drifting down the Ganges in a [...]

Whilst many of the “people” photographs that I took during my recent India trip took the form of close up portraits,  there were other shots which simply used human elements within a larger picture.    These photos were taken alongside the River Ganges at Varanasi. Man reading book, Varanasi. (Kevin Dowie) I liked the idea here [...]

A young man,  deep in thought at Outb Minar,  Delhi.    Whilst visiting this historic site in Delhi,  I was taking photographs of the intricate carvings on the many stone pillars when I sighted this young man leaning against a wall.    My eye was drawn to his “angular” posture contrasted against the strict vertical form of the [...]

The photographer whilst observing,  is himself observed! Man reading newspaper, Delhi. Canon 5D Mark 2 with 24-105mm lens at 55mm and F8.0,  shutter speed 1/400 second at ISO 1000.

A fairly simple image today,  where ever I went in China I saw so many people both in major cities and small towns,  riding bicycles and tricycles.   Things are changing fast however, and with increasing industrialization and extraordinary economic growth,  there is a growing push for people to use more and more motor vehicles.   Indeed [...]

Another shot from my China 1999 series,  again I went the monochrome treatment,  seems to work better than colour for some images.   Pictured on the outskirts of Yangshuo,  this young woman was manoeuvring her cart,  loaded high with goodness knows what,  down a fairly steep hill.   Wearing only light weight sandals she has only her [...]
